A fibre chosen out of necessity

Hemp was not chosen for shipping by chance. Its long, strong fibre withstands heavy tension without breaking, an essential quality for rigging under the weight of sails and the force of wind. Unlike flax, which is finer, or cotton, which weakens in damp conditions, hemp keeps much of its strength even when wet. It was also widely cultivated across Europe, making it a locally available resource that did not depend on distant imports.

The age of sail

From the Middle Ages through the nineteenth century, European naval arsenals consumed considerable quantities of hemp. A large sailing ship of the age of sail could require several dozen kilometres of rope in total, across rigging, running lines and mooring. Sails themselves were most often woven from hemp canvas, a thick, tightly woven fabric able to withstand wind without tearing. This dependence was such that the availability of hemp directly shaped the naval strength of European nations.

Why hemp held up at sea

Salt and constant humidity posed a major challenge for any natural fibre. Ropemakers of the time had developed an answer: tarring. Coating rope in plant-based tar slowed degradation from seawater and sunlight, at the cost of a distinctive smell and a dark colour still associated with the image of traditional rigging. This technique extended a rope's working life, though it did not make it eternal — regular inspection remained necessary to spot wear before failure.

Merchant and military shipping were not the only trades involved. European fishing communities also wove their nets from hemp, a material supple enough to knot finely while withstanding the repeated strain of daily fishing. On the docks, mooring lines and fenders protecting hulls from impact were made using the same techniques as the rigging of large sailing ships. Entire villages once lived from this rope-making trade, a craft passed down through generations, now largely gone but still kept alive in a handful of heritage workshops across Europe.

The decline against synthetic fibres

From the nineteenth century onward, other plant fibres such as manila and sisal gradually competed with hemp for certain uses, before synthetic fibres took over in the twentieth century. Nylon and later polyester brought a lightness, rot resistance and ease of maintenance that natural fibres could not match without treatment. Both leisure and commercial shipping largely adopted these materials, reducing hemp to a decorative or heritage role on most modern boats.

A quiet return in sustainable sailing

In recent years, some boatyards and traditional sailing enthusiasts have turned back to hemp, this time for environmental reasons. Unlike petrochemical-based synthetic fibres, hemp is a renewable resource, grown without heavy pesticide use, and biodegradable at the end of its life. Modern hemp ropes, better treated than in the past, now equip some leisure sailboats built with a low-carbon approach, as well as reconstructions of historic ships where the authenticity of the material matters as much as its function. This choice remains marginal in competitive sailing, where performance comes first, but it is gaining ground among traditional sailing regatta enthusiasts and boatyards that promote a low-carbon build from rigging to hull.

Caring for a hemp rope

A hemp rope, whether old or modern, needs simple but regular care. Rinsing with fresh water after use at sea removes salt that accelerates fibre wear. Air-drying away from prolonged sun exposure preserves its flexibility and limits drying out. A periodic visual check helps spot frayed or stiffened sections, a sign that replacement is approaching. These simple steps, close to those applied two centuries ago, still hold true today.
