A Short History of the E-Cigarette: From Its Origins to Today's Pods
The e-cigarette as we know it today is less than twenty-five years old. Across a handful of device generations, it moved from an experimental object to a structured market, with its own codes, regulation and usage habits. Understanding this path helps place today's devices in context: each generation solved a specific problem left by the one before it, and many words still used today come straight out of this history.
Before electronics: early attempts
The idea of inhaling vapour rather than combustion smoke is not new. As early as the 1960s, an American patent describes a smokeless device meant to replace the cigarette, but it never moves past the prototype stage. It would take until the early 2000s for a workable, mass-producible solution to appear on the market.
2003: Hon Lik's invention
A Chinese pharmacist, Hon Lik, developed the first system widely recognised as the modern e-cigarette. His motivation was personal: a long-time smoker, he was searching for an alternative after his father died of lung cancer. His device used a piezoelectric ceramic heating element to vaporise a nicotine-containing liquid. Marketed in China from 2004 under the Ruyan brand, it reached Europe by the late 2000s, carried by the first specialist distributors.
First generation: the cig-a-like
The very first models deliberately mimic the shape of a regular cigarette, hence the name cig-a-like. Battery and tank are combined in a thin tube, often disposable or fitted with a pre-filled cartridge. Battery life stays short, vapour output is limited, and flavour delivery is rough. These devices mainly served as an entry point for the general public, without convincing most regular smokers to switch for good.
Second generation: the eGo and real battery life
Around 2010, the eGo format changes things: a larger cylindrical, rechargeable battery, paired with a transparent clearomiser users can refill themselves. Battery life improves, vapour becomes denser, and users start choosing their e-liquid independently from the device. This generation establishes the idea of gear you maintain and personalise, rather than a disposable object thrown away after use.
Third generation: box mods and sub-ohm
The mid-2010s bring box mods: bulkier units with adjustable electronics, able to power very low-resistance coils. This shift opens the door to direct lung vaping, a wide draw and heavy vapour production, quite different from the tight draw of the early days. This generation also marks the golden age of customisation: power, airflow, materials, everything becomes adjustable or interchangeable to match personal taste.
Fourth generation: the pod makes a comeback
From around 2017-2018, the market swings back the other way: the pod, a compact device with an interchangeable cartridge, becomes the norm again. It combines the ease of use of the earliest models with the vapour quality gained in between, often paired with nicotine salt e-liquids for a sensation closer to tobacco. It is the dominant generation today, both among new vapers and among those returning to something simpler after going through box mods.
A vocabulary inherited from box mods
Many of the terms still used today actually date back to the box mod generation, even on a simple pod. People still talk about a coil or resistance for the heating element, ohms for its value, draw for the in-mouth sensation, or airflow for the air-intake setting. A modern pod reuses this vocabulary inside a smaller, simpler shell, without a mod's fine-grained settings, but with the same physical principles at work inside.
Where vaping stands in 2026
Today's devices combine elements from every generation: the compactness of the pod, battery life inherited from the eGo, and sometimes a screen or connectivity drawn from the most advanced mods. European regulation has also shaped the recent market, with tighter rules on disposable formats and closer attention to e-liquid traceability. The mainstream device of 2026 looks less like an electronic gadget and more like an everyday consumer object, built to last and to be recharged rather than replaced after a few weeks.

Each generation of e-cigarette answered a limitation of the one before it: battery life for the eGo, power and draw for box mods, simplicity for the pod. Knowing this history helps explain why the market now offers so many different formats, why certain words keep showing up on product pages, and makes it easier to place your own device within a story that is still fairly recent.
