The first modern vaporizer started out as a medical device. Inventor Joseph Robinson called it a mechanical butane ignition vaporizer

It was patented in the 1930’s but never made it to the general public. I can imagine the name had something to do with that.

Some years later the next big step was made and electricity was added. Earlier vaporizers used an open flame to heat up the herbs, the 1960’s added electricity.
Making use of a battery to generate the right temperature. Nowadays, using a battery is not that special. Anything from smartphones to vacuum cleaners works without being plugged into a power source. Fifty years ago however, this was revolutionary. The first truly portable vaporizer was born and most devices on the market today are based around this very design.

People started to experiment with their own homemade designs. They build their own machines out of household appliances and spare parts. Someone that went by the name of dr. Lunglife wrote a manuscript on his invention, a device built around a lightbulb. In his writings he also made claims on the health benefits of vaping. At this point in time no serious research had been done, but history would prove him right.

In the next part of our story we will tell about what gave dried herb vaping it’s big break. Till next time!
